Writing Prompt #4

What is your favorite work of art? What do you love about it?

My favorite work of art is the Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco by Michelangelo. It is one of my goals in life to go view this in person. I cannot wrap my mind around the process of painting on wet plaster, standing on scaffolding, and going from sketches to outlines onto fresh plaster. The fact that he had to mix his own paint, ended up having paint rot, and had to repaint portions would have enraged several painters. Michelangelo was NOT EVEN A PAINTER he was a sculptor and thought he was actually a BAD painter. But hey one Catholic to another I understand that when the Pope asks something of you (Pope Julius II to be exact) you answer. This painting is also in the era where nearly everything was designed to leave people in awe and help them feel closer to God. The iconic scenes depicted in Michelangelo’s paintings achieve still inspire awe in Christian and secular communities to this day. Sometimes I wonder how different the world would look if we would all say ‘yes’ to things that we don’t think we are capable of just as Michelangelo did. Was it a pleasant yes? Probably not. But he could have said, ‘no I will not be painting that check back with me when you want me to make you a sculpture’. Instead he accepted the challenge and gave us the beautiful Sistine Chapel we know today. May we all find our ‘yes’ and accept that His plan is greater than our own.
